Kenneth Baillie is a Professor of Experimental Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, working in genomics in critical care medicine. He also founded APEX. Martha Tissot van Patot is a cardiovascular pulmonary physiologist and has also written a biography of the pioneering work of Mabel Purefoy FitzGerald. Jasmin Paris MBE is a British ultra-marathon runner and senior lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. In 2024 became the first woman to successfully complete the Barkley Marathons. Mike Tipton is a Professor of Human & Applied Physiology at the University of Portsmouth and expert in extreme physiology, especially cold immersion. Damian Bailey is a Professor of Physiology and Biochemistry at the University of South Wales. He researches how the brain responds to extreme physiology in health and disease. Chris Imray is a Professor of Surgery, and Everest Summiteer and a world authority on cold injury. Sarah Walmsley is a Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Edinburgh and researches how neutrophils respond to hypoxia. Dominic Faulkner is best known for his leadership of EverestMax, an ambitious 8000 km British overland expedition from the lowest point on Earth to the highest by bicycle and foot. Abstract SubmissionResearch abstract submissions are welcome for oral or poster presentations. The objective is to gaining insight on the effects of hypoxia (low oxygen levels in the blood) on human physiology.Since 2001, APEX has successfully run 7 expeditions to South America, most recently in July 2025. Their expeditions are renowned for their high quality, student-led research output; development of clinical academics.
